Chase Consistency, Not Perfection

Writer's picture: Paul HighamPaul Higham

We all know the fable of the tortoise and the hare.

Hare is a bit of a dick.

His favourite pastime is taking the piss of out of the slow Tortoise. Exasperated Tortoise challenges Hare to a race. Hare gleefully accepts. Hare shoots off and gains a massive lead. Tortoise steadily plods along. Hare is so far ahead, he decides to have a little kip. Tortoise continues to plod along. Tortoise slowly creeps up on Hare.

Tortoise beats Hare to death.

The morale of the story?

Consistency is key.

The best weight loss programme is the one that you can stick to long-term. Unfortunately though, a lot of people are ‘all or nothing’.

We all heard the New Year’s Resolutions: “I’m going to smash the gym 6x per week.” “Clean eating, no alcohol, no chocolate, no crisps. #2019yearoftheabs.”

You start well… but after a few weeks you’ve missed a couple of workouts, motivation has dried up and you’re eating a garlic naan bread out of the bin.

Whereas the person that took the more sustainable approach of: “I’ll commit to training 3x per week but will have the occasional week when I can only get in twice.” “My diet will be good 80% of the time.” “I’m not training on holiday… don’t even ask. Straight back to it when I’m home though”

Come 2020, who do you think will be in the better position?

It’s better to get there slowly than not at all.
